Governments provide scientific data on the ocean, but it is typically sparse, biased, and isn't tailored for use by business or even other scientists. Actea transforms sparse ocean data to solve problems.
Operations
Ocean forecasts miss nearshore water. Actea can help you understand what an ocean forecast means for your nearshore operations.
Technology Investment
New technologies are emerging to adapt to the changing ocean. Actea helps you understand future needs, so you can know what technologies to invest in.
Strategic Planning
The rapid acidification and warming of the ocean means your resources and operations will look very different in 5-10 years. Actea can help you plan now to be ready.
Carbon Removal Projects
Site your carbon removal project to maximize its effectiveness and its environmental co-benefits. Understand how valuable it will be in the future.
For regulators and scientists
Actea is a contributor to NOAA’s ACLIM project, evaluating climate impacts on marine fisheries in the Bering Sea, Alaska. Actea has repeatedly collaborated with the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans to, amongst other activities, better understand the value of marine protected areas in a changing climate. Actea produced projections included in the Norwegian Miljødirektoratet’s Climate Impact on Important Coastal Water Species. We have produced data for the Nunatsiavut Nation, the EU FutureMares project, and others.
If you are a regulator, scientist, or government agency we can contract to produce and deliver the specific data you need to fulfill your mission. Email us at info@actea.earth
For mariculture
Site-specific forecasting
Ocean weather forecasts are available in the open ocean, but open ocean conditions are very different than mariculture's nearshore conditions. Actea transforms global scale data to the specifics of your operation, enabling decision making. Actea can do this days, months, or years into the future.
Farming outcomes
Actea projects changes in growth rates, pest burdens, and mortality based on underlying changes to ocean temperature and chemistry.
Optimal site shifts
We have an analysis of aquaculture site quality showing large shifts in the best places to farm between the 2000s and 2030s. Contact us to understand these changes.
For marine carbon dioxide removal
Actea has a statistical marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) model which compliments and extends the dynamic models historically used to understand ocean changes that result from mCDR projects. We use Lagrangian tracking in combination with ocean carbonate system and background biogeochemical models to quantify air-sea flux and environmental co-benefits and risks.
We are supporting Vesta with global air-sea flux modeling for their project in Duck, NC.
Scientific validation
Actea has validated its approach to transforming ocean, by confirming that our techniques accurately predicted the past.
A published validation of our ocean climate projections is available in Kristiansen et al. 2024.
How Actea works with customers
Understand Needs
We begin by understanding your specific requirements and challenges related to ocean data.
Customize Data
Our team creates tailored analyses by feeding public and proprietary data into our ML platform - we generate new custom datasets.
Deliver Actionable Insights
We transform complex ocean data into clear, decision-ready information for your organization.
Standard pricing for fisheries regulators is available upon request.
About Actea
Actea is a public benefits corporation whose mission is to help the world mitigate and adapt to climate change through the responsible use of the oceans.
Impact
By helping regulators scientifically manage fish stocks Actea is contributing to the sustainable use of marine resources. Actea's climate forecast for mariculture can help improve fish health and lower the carbon footprint associated with production. Actea's climate insights can focus marine restoration resources on the locations where they will have the most benefit. Actea can produce further positive impact through enabling carbon dioxide removal projects, and helping them be more efficient.
Team
Leadership
Dr. Trond Kristiansen
Cofounder, CTO
About Trond
Trond has more than 20 years of experience modeling ocean ecosystems, including how they will be impacted by climate change, fisheries, and activities like oil exploration. Trond has worked in Norway at IMR and NIVA. For the last several years, Trond has been creating high-resolution climate information to inform decision making by different actors. In addition to his role at Actea Trond is a Principal Scientist at the Farallon Institute.
Jordan Miller
Cofounder, CEO
About Jordan
Jordan cofounded the computer vision and sensor fusion startup RealityCap, acquired by Intel. Jordan was a VP at Highbridge Capital, at the time one of the largest hedge funds in the world, where he traded structured credit and convertible bonds, and developed risk management systems. For over 20 years Jordan has pragmatically applied statistical models to solve real world problems. Caltech grad.

About Halley
Dr. Froehlich is an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, & Marine Biology and Environmental Studies Program. She is a leading scientist in the study of the impacts and interactions of aquaculture, wild capture fisheries, and climate change. She is a current author on the upcoming Fifth US National Climate Assessment, contributing to the Southwest chapter. Learn more about her lab and research here
Dr. Eagle Jones
About Eagle
Dr. Jones is a pioneer in visual-inertial sensor fusion / SLAM and autonomous driving, and an expert in computer vision and machine learning. He developed and raced autonomous vehicles in the 2004 and 2005 DARPA grand challenges, leading to his research focus on multi-sensor fusion for state estimation. His technical skills are balanced by his experience as a team leader, corporate strategist, and problem solver, developed during his time in strategy consulting for top Fortune 50 clients at McKinsey. He has founded or been an early employee at six startups and has led large international teams developing virtual and augmented reality technology at both Intel and Meta.
